The film’s other considered titles were Behind Locked Doors, Transvestite, He or She, and I Changed My Sex. It was also going to be a documentary about Christine Jorgensen and her sex change but when Bela Lugosi signed on as the “scientist,” the documentary aspect collapsed and the story was rewritten.¹
Producer George Weiss sough out to have other people who’ve had sex changes appear in the film. One woman he approached declined due to Bela Lugosi’s involvement because “Lugosi signified ‘horror’ and any sex change, therefore, was horror.”¹
According to small time actor Henry Bederski, one of the “transvestite” characters was played by a homosexual who served in the Polish Army.¹
