Mädchen in Uniform was based on the play "Gestern und Heute" by Christa Winsloe, who also wrote the screenplay. The film was one of the first films with openly lesbian themes and this cultural expression was relatively allowed in the Weimer Era of Germany (1919-1933).
The fillm was remade twice, once in Mexico in 1951 and again in Germany in 1958.
