The National Board of Review of Moving Pictures (NBRMP) asked Chaplin to remove part of the scene where he kisses a girl in men's clothing. However, this was directed at the stage manager's "pantomimed accusations," and his behaving like a "sissified character."
The kiss between them was relatively understood by audiences as a cheap comical moment, but the pantomiming brought to light the queer nature of such an act, and thus had to be removed to not give the audience the wrong idea.
